We’re sure you’ve read about the Disney Deluxe Dining plan and wondered if it’s worth it.  So many different types of dining plan, the deluxe dining plan HAS to be one to avoid based on price alone, right?  Wrong!   We’re going to break it down and explain it to you so that you can make an informed decision about whether the Disney Deluxe Dining plan is for you.

Disney recently launched a new Dining Plan, bringing the total to 4 choices for you.  The Disney Deluxe Dining Plan gives you more food than any of the other Dining plans and we’re going to talk you through just how much, so you can be sure you get the plan that will meet all of your needs and let you dine in the locations you really want to!  There are many wonderful (not to mention delicious) dining experiences you can choose on the deluxe dining plan and, if used correctly, it can definitely save you money; so read on to get the low-down as well as the pros, cons and our top tips!

How To Use The Disney Deluxe Dining Plan (Pros And Cons!)

What Is The Deluxe Dining Plan?

The Disney Deluxe Dining Plan is a pre-payment method for dining during your stay at Disney.  You can only get the deluxe Disney dining plan if you’re staying onsite, at a Disney resort, and you must purchase it for the duration of your stay for everyone in the room. It is a version of the Disney Dining Plan that you can purchase if you want the most food and flexibility!

Unlike the Quick Service Dining Plan, this one is more expensive, but you get a whole lot!

The deluxe dining plan will give you ‘credits’ for meals at Table Service or Quick Service locations.    Disney’s Quick Service restaurants are the ones where you place your order at a counter and then carry it to your table (with 2 exceptions – Be Our Guest breakfast and lunch and Pizzafari Family Style dining).   You won’t get waited on in a Quick Service restaurant, so if you want a refill on your drink, you go and get it yourself.  Table service restaurants are where you’re greeted; taken to your table and waited on.

You can also get the deluxe dining plan if you’re staying in a Disney Vacation Club property (including if you’ve rented the DVC points – read our article on how to rent DVC points at Deluxe resorts cheaply!)

What Is Included On Disney’s Deluxe Dining Plan?

Per night of stay, each paying guest will get 3 meal credits, which can be used as either Table or Quick Service credits, plus 2 snacks.  You can use your credits in whichever order you want; you don’t have to spread them out evenly.   Read more about kids’ credits further down.   So, a family of 2 adults and 2 teenagers arriving on a Friday and leaving on a Tuesday will get a total of 48 Meal credits and 32 snack credits between them for the duration of their stay.   Credits on all dining plans can be used until midnight on the day of check out.

Each person will also get a refillable Disney mug which you can use in ANY Disney Resort for the duration of your stay.   These can be fountain drinks; milk; coffee; hot chocolate – if it’s served in the resort’s self service drink area (after the tills), you can put it in your refillable mug!

Most table service restaurants require an Advance Dining Reservation (ADR) which can be made 180 days in advance – some locations are highly sought after and, if travelling at a busy time of the year, you would be well advised to try and get a reservation.  If you’re not lucky, or your plans change, keep checking as many slots become available even on the day before you want to dine.  If all else fails, you could try a walk-up.

Most Table Service restaurants cost one credit, but ‘Signature’ dining costs 2 credits; the Disney Deluxe Dining plan is the one, more so than the other plans, that will enable you to eat at Signature Restaurants and there are some excellent Signature Restaurants to choose from.  You will need to think about this to plan how you intend to allocate your credits – read on for more about Signature dining.

There are some restaurants where you can’t use any dining plans, at all.

What Items Are Included On The Deluxe Dining Plan?

What’s in a Quick Service credit?

A Quick Service credit on the Disney Deluxe Dining plan includes an entrée, or a complete combo meal, and a drink from a Quick Service restaurant.   You can use these meal credits for Breakfast, lunch or dinner.  The entrée may be something like a burger with fries; a sandwich with salad or a curry with rice, for example.

What’s in a Table Service Credit?

A table service credit on the Deluxe Disney Dining plan includes an appetizer (this is exclusive to the Deluxe dining plan, other dining plans do not include appetizers) plus an entrée, dessert and a drink (breakfast does not include dessert but buffets will have ‘sweet’ options available).

What drink options are available?

There are 2 main drink options available for both Quick and Table service dining:

  1. Each diner can choose from the fountain drinks (and milk) as well as from any speciality drinks that are offered at that restaurant (e.g. shakes, smoothies etc).  Not every restaurant has the same options with regards to speciality drinks, to it pays to check the menus in advance.
  2. Diners over 21 could choose, instead, to have a single-serving of beer, wine or a cocktail/mixed drink.  Again, the menus vary for cocktails, so check in advance if there’s something you particularly like or want to try.  Don’t forget your ID if you’re ordering alcohol!

What Are Snacks On The Deluxe Disney Dining Plan?

Snacks are, typically, things that cost up to/around $5 on the menu.

Bottled water/drinks; ice creams etc count as snacks, but in general, we feel there are FAR better uses of your snack credit.   Generally, to get good ‘value for money’ for your credit, you should be aiming for snacks that are over $5.

Anything that you can use a snack credit for has a purple DDP logo beside it on the menu.   We’re going to explain best use of snack credits, later.

2020 Disney Dining Plan Deluxe Credit Values

The 2020 prices for the deluxe Disney dining plan is $119 for guests over the age of 10 and $47.50 for guests aged 3-9.   Kids under 3 don’t pay for tickets, so you can’t buy a dining plan for them, but with the amount of food you can get on the deluxe dining plan, you shouldn’t need to.  Read more about Disney with toddlers/under 3’s.

This is a ‘per night’ price and, remember, you’ll need to pay for it for each night of your stay and for everyone in your room (over the age of 3).
Generally, to get the best value for your money on the deluxe dining plan, you need to be spending at least $42 on a table service meal; $19 on a quick service meal and $5 on a snack.   Read on to find our Dining plan calculator and how to use it.

Character meals and dining packages are, generally, a good use of table service credits.  Signature dining may not seem to be the best use of credits, as your meal would rarely cost over $84, but it may be a great way for you to experience a restaurant you otherwise may not feel is justifiable, because of the cost.

Others have created this spreadsheet, which lists the average and maximum prices for the table and quick service restaurants (quick service is on the other sheet, change this at the bottom) and will also tell you which Table Service restaurants/dining packages are 2 credits.

Remember, when dining in a buffet, or Table Service restaurant (including family style service), the dining plan doesn’t include gratuities, so you will need to factor that in, based on what the price of the meal would have been.   You won’t need to add gratuities when using Quick Service credits.   You may be interested in our full article on Tipping at Disney.  The shows and Cinderella’s Royal Table are unique in that the price includes the gratuity.

Using Table Service Credits

Your server will probably ask, but if they don’t, tell them before ordering that you are on the Deluxe Disney Dining plan (other dining plans do not include an appetizer).  When it comes to ‘paying’, they will bring you the bill which will show you how much is expected for the gratuity – be aware that Disney automatically adds gratuity for parties of 6 or more – and you will get the receipt showing how many credits you have left.

Signature Dining and Dinner Shows

You can use 2 Table Service meal credits for any of the following:
  • A Dining experience at one of Disney’s finest, Signature restaurants
  • A Disney Dinner show (category 2 or 3 seating at any show, or category 1 seating for the last show of the evening of Hoop Dee Doo Musical Revue
  • 1 Cinderella’s Royal Table Experience
  • 1 Dinner at Be Our Guest
  • 1 In-room Private Dining meal at Deluxe Resorts
  • 1 In-room Pizza delivery at Deluxe Resorts and Coronado Springs

How Do I Tell If The Deluxe Dining Plan Is Right For Me?

Firstly, as we’ve indicated above, the deluxe dining plan is a LOT of food.  But, to be honest, depending on our party size, who’s in our party and the time of year we’re travelling, there are times when this would have been just perfect!!

Download our Disney Deluxe Dining Plan Calculator by clicking on the link below; there are more detailed instructions as well as a completed example for a 3-day plan.   In order for the calculator to work correctly for you, fill out, in the grey boxes, exact prices for where you want to eat, as reflected on the Disney website!

Choose what you would normally order; don’t over or under shoot or your results won’t give you an accurate guide.  Fill out every box in order to get an accurate depiction.   You can even use the sample for inspiration!

Filling out the deluxe Dining plan calculator fully, and to the best of your ability, is the only way to get a good look and see if the plan will be worth it for you!  Yes, it takes a little time, but think of all the money you will save if it doesn’t work out for you or all the money you WILL save if it ends up working out in your favor!

Don’t forget to add the cost of your drink, too – if you know there’s a cocktail you’d love to try, you can really notice the difference the deluxe dining plan can make here!

Disney Deluxe Dining Plan Calculator

Please note: When using our deluxe dining plan calculator,  read each column from top to bottom. So the first column on the left will be “Day 1” and then you will go DOWN that column [not over left/right] but top/bottom and here you will fill out by breakfast/lunch/dinner/snack!   We hope this makes using it clearer for you!

What Are The Best Snack Credits On The Deluxe  Plan?

There are so many snacks: too many to list all the possibilities.   However, others have created this spreadsheet of snacks, which is a great source of information on snack credits.

There are SO many great snacks, even some that are becoming iconic and we’ve showcased some of the very best in 20 Best Disney Snacks

As mentioned above, to get the best value from your snack credits, you should be looking to use them on items that cost over $5.   While you absolutely can use credits for bottles of soda or water you’re really not going to get the best value for your plan, when you could use them for more adventurous/filling/expensive snacks.

That said, if it’s more important to you to not waste any credits AND not pay out of pocket for anything, then obviously, it may make sense to spend the credit on the bottled soda/water.   Don’t forget, you can ask for a cup of water at any quick service dining location in Disney parks (my kids don’t like the taste of ‘Disney water’, but I keep a couple of sachets of  Crystal light or similar in my bag and they’re happy!).   And remember to take your refillable resort mug if you’re dining (or snacking) at other resorts!

Children And The Deluxe Disney Dining Plan

Kids (aged 3-9) need to order from the kids’ menu (adults can also do this, if they want).

If your child is a big or more adventurous eater, you could enquire how much it would cost to ‘upgrade’ their plan to the adult price.  This generally works out most affordable when the ‘free dining’ offer has been taken advantage of, but it is an option you could consider.   Read more about how to get Free Disney Dining.

How To Keep Track Of Deluxe Credits

Every time you purchase a meal or a snack, you will get a receipt from the till.  At the bottom of the receipt, you’ll see how many credits you have left.   You can also keep track via My Disney Experience.   If you prefer, any Guest Services location or the concierge in your resort will be able to check and let you know.

Pros Of The Deluxe Dining plan

There’s plenty of food – you may get the credits per night, but we’re pretty sure you’ll be able to eat on the day you check in and the day you check out, too.  This could be great value if you’re able to plan to arrive early and leave later – making the very most of all of the credits you have!

You can do all the Character dining you want; there were times visiting with kids when we could have had a character breakfast and they’d be happy for another character meal in the evening, too!   The Disney Deluxe dining plan gives you the Table Service credits to do this, without worrying about how much it will cost you!

Once you’ve paid for the Deluxe Dining plan, you’re unlikely to need to pay out of pocket for any food during your vacation, so your budgeting is easier.

The all-inclusive feel you will get on Disney’s deluxe dining plan is unlike any other dining plan.

You may feel your vacation is at a more relaxed pace because you’re taking time out to sit and enjoy your food, more than once a day.

If you feel you wouldn’t justify the expense to yourself to try a Signature restaurant, the Deluxe dining plan gives you the chance to do just that.

If you plan, it can save you money.   If you like to drink speciality drinks with your meals, it can save you a LOT of money.

photo of character at 1900 Park Fare; excellent option on the dining plan

Cons of the Deluxe Dining plan

You will get a lot of food.  You may feel too full to make the most of your credits.

Table service dining is more time consuming and you may feel like you’re spending more time dining than you are enjoying the parks.

Your kids may get bored in table service restaurants, which doesn’t give you a relaxing dining experience.

You may end up wasting credits, which is a waste of money.

In order to make sure you use your credits wisely and to make the deluxe dining plan good value for your money, you will need to plan; that kind of level of holiday organization may not be your idea of fun!

Spontaneity becomes harder as you need to cancel ADRs 24 hours ahead to avoid a penalty charge.

If you have no alternative but to arrive late at night and getting an early flight on check out day, it’s going to be hard for you to use your credits.

We recommend you use the tips and the calculator above to work out if the Deluxe Disney dining plan is for you.   You don’t want to be worried about overspending on holiday, but neither should you be worrying about whether you’re going to get good value out of your plan or feeling under pressure to have 3 table service meals a day just to ‘make it worthwhile’.  You may like to read more about the Quick Service Dining plan, which you can do here.
